Pop!_OS is developed by System76, the Denver-based hardware manufacturer, and is tuned specifically for the laptops and desktops System76 sells while remaining fully usable on any compatible hardware.
COSMIC: A Ground-Up Desktop Rewrite
24.04 LTS replaces GNOME with COSMIC, a desktop environment System76 built from scratch in Rust on the Iced toolkit, entirely Wayland-native with no X11 fallback. It ships first-party applications for files, settings, the app store, terminal, and system monitoring rather than adopting existing GNOME or KDE components. Existing 22.04 users receive an in-OS upgrade notification once they’re ready to move to COSMIC.
Built for Gaming and Development
Pop!_OS ships NVIDIA drivers as a selectable ISO variant so proprietary graphics support works immediately after install without manual configuration, and includes a Tiling window management mode built into COSMIC for keyboard-driven workflows.
