PipeWire is the audio and video server on almost every modern Linux desktop. It replaced both PulseAudio and JACK, and it also carries screen-sharing video on Wayland. Version 1.6.9 was released on September 17, 2026. We covered it in the news.
What changed
Better resampling. When your music is 44.1 kHz and your audio device runs at 48 kHz, PipeWire converts between them for every stream, continuously. Improved quality here reaches everything that plays sound.
JACK object handling. Professional audio applications such as Ardour and Carla talk to PipeWire through its JACK compatibility layer. Better object handling makes that layer behave more like real JACK.
RAOP fixes. RAOP is AirPlay audio, for streaming from Linux to AirPlay speakers.
Bluetooth, PulseAudio compatibility, and GStreamer improvements round it out.
Installing
PipeWire is a core desktop component, so update it through your distribution, not from source:
pactl info | grep 'Server Name' # shows PipeWire's PulseAudio layer
pipewire --version
wpctl status # devices, streams, and defaults
After an update, restart the user services rather than rebooting:
systemctl --user restart pipewire pipewire-pulse wireplumber
Our PipeWire vs PulseAudio guide explains how the pieces fit, including WirePlumber, the session manager that decides routing, and Bluetooth on Linux covers headset codecs.
