OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) Studio has become the standard free tool for streaming and screen recording, used everywhere from professional Twitch and YouTube setups to simple local screen captures for tutorials and demos.
Core Capabilities
OBS composes scenes from multiple sources (windows, cameras, browser sources, images) with per-source filters, transitions between scenes, and direct output to streaming platforms via RTMP or to local video files with configurable encoders (including hardware-accelerated NVENC, VAAPI, and QSV where available).
Linux Support
OBS Studio 32.1.2 runs on both X11 and Wayland sessions on Linux, though Wayland screen capture depends on your desktop environment’s implementation of the relevant portals (PipeWire-based capture is standard on modern GNOME and KDE).
Installing on Linux
The official, recommended installation method on Linux is Flatpak:
flatpak install flathub com.obsproject.Studio
The source tarball linked here is for building from source or for distribution packagers; most users should prefer Flatpak or their distribution’s package.
