Linux Mint remains one of the most recommended distributions for people moving away from Windows, largely because Cinnamon deliberately mimics a familiar desktop metaphor: a taskbar, a start-style menu, and a system tray, without the learning curve some other desktops introduce.
Why People Choose Mint
Mint ships with codecs and common proprietary drivers available out of the box, a dedicated Update Manager that categorizes updates by risk level, and Timeshift for easy system snapshots and rollback before major changes. It’s built on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS underneath, so the same 5-year support window and package availability apply.
Cinnamon 6.6
The 22.x series ships Cinnamon 6.6, with continued performance tuning and Wayland support maturing ahead of Mint 23’s planned full Wayland transition later in 2026.
