Linux Lite 7.8 is built on the Ubuntu 24.04 LTS package base with kernel 6.8, running a customized Xfce 4.18 desktop designed to feel immediately familiar to people coming from Windows. This release rewrote several of the project’s core utility applications in Python and GTK4.
Built for Older Hardware
Linux Lite’s core mission is keeping aging PCs usable rather than pushing users toward a hardware upgrade. The default install carries a light application set (Firefox, a lightweight office suite, and basic media tools) and avoids the visual effects and background services that make heavier desktop environments feel sluggish on older CPUs and spinning disks.
Aimed at Windows Switchers
The project leans into a deliberately Windows-like desktop layout and includes its own “Lite Welcome” onboarding app and “Lite Tweaks” utility, both aimed at smoothing the first-run experience for people who have never used Linux before.
