Linux 6.1 was promoted to a longterm-support branch shortly after its initial release and remains under active maintenance years later, with 6.1.180 continuing the weekly cadence of security patches and driver fixes that longterm branches receive. Per the kernel.org maintainers’ schedule, the 6.1 tree is supported through December 2027.
Why an Older LTS Branch Still Matters
Distributions and vendors that qualified hardware or built products against 6.1 years ago rely on this continued patch stream rather than jumping to a newer major version, since a longterm branch only backports fixes rather than introducing new features or driver churn that could destabilize an already-shipped product.
