LibreOffice forked from OpenOffice.org in 2010 and has since become the default office suite on nearly every major Linux distribution, with strong .docx/.xlsx/.pptx compatibility for exchanging files with Microsoft Office users.
LibreOffice 26.2: The 2026 Reference Version
26.2 became the reference release for the year, adding Markdown import and export support, visual cell-to-cell connectors in Calc (via Insert > Shape > Connectors), and performance improvements across EPUB export, scroll speed, SVG export with embedded bitmaps, and 3D chart rendering. 26.2.2 rolls up more than 80 accumulated bug fixes on top of that base.
Installing the Official Tarball
The download here is the official Document Foundation-built .deb bundle tarball, which extracts into a folder of individual .deb packages you install directly, giving you the latest version immediately rather than waiting for your distribution’s repositories to catch up:
tar -xzvf LibreOffice_26.2.2_Linux_x86-64_deb.tar.gz
cd LibreOffice_26.2.2_Linux_x86-64_deb/DEBS
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
For most users, installing via the distribution’s package manager or Flatpak remains simpler and handles updates automatically.
