HPLIP is HP’s own driver and management toolkit layered on top of CUPS, providing the actual print queue drivers plus scanning support (via SANE) and fax capability for supported all-in-one devices. Most distributions bundle HPLIP by default or make it trivially installable, but current releases from the project itself often support newer HP hardware ahead of what’s packaged in a given distribution’s repositories.

What’s Included

Beyond the raw print drivers, HPLIP ships a graphical device manager (hp-toolbox) for checking ink levels, running alignment and cleaning routines, and managing scan settings, functionality that would otherwise require HP’s Windows-only software.

Installing

chmod +x hplip-3.26.4.run
sudo ./hplip-3.26.4.run

The installer detects your distribution and pulls in the appropriate CUPS and SANE integration automatically. Most users on mainstream distributions can instead just install their distro’s hplip package (sudo apt install hplip on Debian/Ubuntu), which is simpler and still current enough for most existing hardware.

When to Use the Official Installer Instead

Reach for the run-file installer specifically when you have a newer HP printer or scanner that isn’t yet recognized by your distribution’s packaged HPLIP version, since HP’s own releases typically add new device support well before distro packages catch up.
