HandBrake converts video between formats and containers, commonly used for ripping DVDs/Blu-rays to a modern format, shrinking video files for storage or streaming, or converting camera footage into something more broadly compatible.
Hardware-Accelerated Encoding
HandBrake supports hardware encoders (NVENC on NVIDIA, VAAPI on Intel/AMD, QSV on Intel Quick Sync) alongside software x264/x265 encoding, letting you trade encode speed for file size and quality depending on the hardware available and how much time you’re willing to spend.
Installing on Linux
The officially recommended installation method on Linux is Flatpak, distributed exclusively through Flathub:
flatpak install flathub fr.handbrake.ghb
HandBrake, GitHub, and Flathub are the only official sources for HandBrake downloads; the project explicitly warns against third-party sites bundling modified installers. The source tarball linked here is for building from source or for distribution packagers rather than typical end-user installation.
Presets
HandBrake ships a large library of built-in presets tuned for specific targets (web, mobile devices, specific streaming platform requirements), which is usually a better starting point than manually tuning encoder settings from scratch.
