GParted Live packages the GParted partition editor into a standalone, bootable live environment, letting you resize, move, create, delete, and format partitions on a drive without needing to boot into any installed operating system first. This is the safest way to resize a system partition, since the partition being edited isn’t mounted or in active use by a running OS while you work on it.

What It Supports

GParted handles ext2/3/4, Btrfs, XFS, NTFS, FAT16/32, exFAT, and several other filesystems, with support varying by filesystem for specific operations like online resize versus requiring the partition to be unmounted first. LVM physical volumes and LUKS-encrypted partitions are also supported for inspection and basic operations.

Booting the Live Image

Write the ISO to a USB drive with a tool like dd or Ventoy, then boot from it:

sudo dd if=gparted-live-1.8.1-3-amd64.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=4M status=progress

Replace /dev/sdX with your actual USB device, double-check this before running the command, since dd will silently overwrite the target device.

Why Not Just Use a Distro’s Installed GParted?

Many desktop distributions ship GParted as an installable package for use inside a running session, which works fine for partitions not currently mounted or in use. GParted Live exists specifically for cases needing to resize or repair a partition that’s actively in use by the running system, most commonly, shrinking or growing the partition an OS is currently booted from.
