Git 2.56.0 was released on September 28, 2026, following Git 2.55.0. We covered it in the news.
Highlights
| Command | New |
|---|---|
git add --resolved | Stages only conflict-resolved paths, and checks for leftover conflict markers |
git branch --delete-merged | Deletes local branches already merged into their upstream |
git bisect --reset-when-found | Returns to your starting point, or the culprit, when bisect finishes |
git history drop | Experimental: removes a commit and replays its descendants |
git replay --linearize | Drops merge commits and linearises history |
git refs | New create, delete, update, and rename subcommands |
Plus better typo suggestions for git push and git branch, clearer root commits in git log --graph, improved --follow across renames, and retries when a config file is locked.
