GIMP has been the standard free alternative to Photoshop for over two decades, and the 3.x series brought the biggest architectural changes in years: a move to GTK3/GTK4, the GEGL processing engine for non-destructive, high-precision editing, and significantly improved PSD compatibility.
What’s New in 3.2.4
This point release focuses on bug fixes and UX polish: better layer handling in the non-destructive editing pipeline, improved PSD file compatibility with more accurate layer support, modernized icons and theme updates, and improved high-DPI scaling for sharper rendering on 4K displays.
Installing on Linux
GIMP’s primary Linux distribution method is Flatpak, which is the version recommended on gimp.org for most users:
flatpak install flathub org.gimp.GIMP
Most distributions also carry a native GIMP package:
# Debian/Ubuntu
sudo apt install gimp
# Fedora
sudo dnf install gimp
