The minimal install ISO doesn’t install a working system on its own, it’s a small boot environment containing the tools needed to partition disks, fetch a stage3 tarball, and compile Gentoo’s base system and every package from source using Portage, Gentoo’s package manager. There’s no automated installer, the entire installation process is documented step by step in the Gentoo Handbook and performed manually.

Why People Still Use It

Compiling everything locally means every package can be built with the exact compiler flags, USE flags (Gentoo’s per-package feature toggles), and hardware optimizations the user wants, at the cost of dramatically longer install and update times compared to a binary distribution. It’s a genuinely different tradeoff than nearly everything else in this list: maximum control and understanding of the system, in exchange for doing far more of the work yourself.

Autobuilt, Dated Releases

Unlike point-release distributions, Gentoo publishes autobuilt install images on a rolling schedule identified by a UTC timestamp rather than a version number, since the underlying Portage tree and package set are continuously updated regardless of which install image you start from.
