FileZilla remains the default recommendation for graphical FTP/SFTP file transfer on Linux, more than two decades after its original release. Its dual-pane layout, local filesystem on one side, remote server on the other, makes drag-and-drop file transfers and directory comparisons straightforward without memorizing command-line syntax.
Protocol Support
Beyond plain FTP, FileZilla supports FTP over TLS (FTPS) and SFTP (FTP over SSH), the latter encrypting the entire session including credentials and file contents, unlike plain FTP which transmits everything unencrypted. For any server exposed to the internet, SFTP or FTPS should be used instead of plain FTP.
Installing on Linux
tar xf FileZilla_3.70.6_x86_64-linux-gnu.tar.xz
cd FileZilla3/bin
./filezilla
Most distributions also carry a native filezilla package through their standard repositories.
Site Manager and Queued Transfers
The built-in Site Manager stores connection profiles (including optional saved credentials, encrypted using a master password if configured) for servers you connect to regularly, and the transfer queue lets you batch multiple file transfers rather than handling them one at a time.
A Note on the Installer History
Years ago, FileZilla’s Windows installer bundled third-party adware offers by default. That practice was discontinued; official downloads from filezilla-project.org today do not include bundled offers. It’s still worth sourcing FileZilla only from the official project site or a reputable mirror.
