Fedora Silverblue 44
Fedora Silverblue is an immutable, image-based desktop variant of Fedora built on rpm-ostree, where the base system is read-only and updates apply atomically as bootable, rollback-able deployments.

Silverblue is Fedora’s take on the “immutable desktop” model: the base operating system lives on a read-only filesystem managed by rpm-ostree, and updates are applied as a complete new deployment rather than patched in place. Every deployment is bootable independently, so a bad update is undone by simply rebooting into the previous one from the boot menu.
How It Differs From Regular Fedora
Rather than dnf install, individual applications are layered as Flatpaks by default, keeping the base OS image small, consistent, and easy to reason about. System-level package changes still go through rpm-ostree, but this is meant to be the exception rather than the everyday workflow, unlike a traditional package-managed desktop.
Why Choose It Over Fedora Workstation
Silverblue trades some day-to-day flexibility for a system that’s very hard to break in ways you can’t trivially undo, useful for anyone who has been burned by a bad update leaving a traditional desktop unbootable. Development work that needs a mutable environment is typically done inside Toolbx or Distrobox containers rather than on the host OS directly.
