elementary OS treats design as a first-class engineering concern rather than an afterthought. The Pantheon desktop, built specifically for the project rather than adapted from GNOME or KDE, aims for a cohesive, consistent look across every first-party application.
Secure Session
elementary OS 8 introduced Secure Session, a Wayland-based session that isolates applications and requires explicit user consent before an app can access the screen, clipboard, camera, or other sensitive resources, similar in spirit to the permission model on mobile operating systems. 8.1.1 continues refining this alongside general bug fixes and the latest Ubuntu LTS hardware enablement kernel for improved hardware support.
AppCenter
elementary’s AppCenter is a pay-what-you-want app store where developers set a suggested price and users can choose to pay it, reduce it, or install for free, with the goal of making indie Linux app development more financially sustainable.
