Docker Engine is the daemon and CLI that most people mean when they say “Docker”: it builds images, runs containers, manages networks and volumes, and exposes the API that higher-level tools like Docker Compose and Docker Desktop build on.
What’s New in Docker Engine 29
Version 29 is a foundational release: the containerd image store, previously opt-in, is now the default for new installations, changing how images are stored and managed under the hood. The minimum supported API version increased to 1.44, meaning Docker installations older than v25 are now considered end of life. This release also adds opt-in support for nftables-based rules as an alternative to iptables for container networking.
Installing on Linux
The static binary tarball linked here is useful for manual installs, air-gapped systems, or environments without access to Docker’s APT/DNF repositories. Most users on supported distributions should use Docker’s official install script or repository instead, which also sets up the systemd service and handles updates:
curl -fsSL https://get.docker.com | sh
