Calibre has been the ebook management standard for close to two decades. It catalogs a library with real metadata, converts between essentially every ebook format, edits EPUB files directly, and talks to e-readers over USB.
Format conversion is the killer feature
Buy or download a book in one format and your reader wants another; Calibre converts between EPUB, MOBI, AZW3, PDF, FB2, DOCX, and more, including bulk conversion across a whole library. Its conversion pipeline is genuinely good at preserving structure rather than producing a wall of text.
Library management
Beyond conversion, Calibre fetches metadata and cover art from online sources, organizes by author, series, and custom columns, and supports saved searches across a library of thousands of books. The built-in ebook editor handles EPUB and AZW3 directly for fixing broken formatting.
Installing on Linux
The official route is a self-contained binary installer that works across distributions:
sudo -v && wget -nv -O- https://download.calibre-ebook.com/linux-installer.sh | sudo sh /dev/stdin
Piping a script to a root shell is worth pausing over; the alternative is downloading the tarball, inspecting it, and extracting it yourself, or installing your distribution’s calibre package, which is usually a release or two behind.
Calibre-Web for a browser interface
Calibre’s desktop UI is dated and unapologetically dense. For browsing a library from other devices, the separate Calibre-Web project puts a modern web interface on top of an existing Calibre library, which is a common self-hosted pairing.
