CachyOS is an Arch-based distribution built around performance tuning, and the August 2026 snapshot is the project’s fifth release this year. We covered it when it shipped.

What CachyOS actually changes

The distinguishing work is in the kernel and the package builds. CachyOS ships kernels with scheduler patches and configurations tuned for desktop responsiveness, and builds packages with newer instruction set baselines, x86-64-v3 and v4, for machines that support them.

That second part is the more measurable one. Most distributions build for the original x86-64 baseline so packages run everywhere, which means every CPU instruction added since 2003 goes unused. Building for v3 or v4 uses AVX2 and later, and on the right hardware the difference is real.

The kernel work has become influential beyond CachyOS itself. Garuda’s Temeraire release replaced linux-zen with a CachyOS-derived kernel, which is a reasonable measure of how far the engineering has spread.

Shelly rewritten in Zig

Shelly, the default GUI package manager, was rewritten from C# to Zig for this release, dropping the managed runtime in favour of native binaries with lower memory use and faster startup.

Rewriting working software in a different language is usually a bad idea, and the justification here is specific: a package manager pulling in a .NET runtime is a strange dependency for a distribution whose entire pitch is minimal overhead.

The application also gained AUR PKGBUILD previews with build output, which is the single most useful thing a graphical AUR frontend can do. Shelly has since reached 3.1, adding native PKGBUILD execution with Landlock sandboxing.

Desktop and installer

KDE Plasma 6.7.4 with KDE Frameworks 6.28 and KDE Gear 26.04.3, plus new Noctalia variants for mango and niri and an updated Nord theme.

The installer received improved handheld detection and experimental support for upcoming Server Edition profiles.

Reasonable expectations

CachyOS is Arch underneath, with all that implies for maintenance. The performance gains are real and modest; they will not turn old hardware into new hardware, and most desktop workloads are not CPU-bound in ways these optimizations address.

The scheduler and I/O tuning is where users report the most noticeable difference, particularly under load.
