ASUS ROG and TUF laptops expose fan control, performance profiles, keyboard lighting, and charge limiting through vendor-specific interfaces. On Windows, Armoury Crate drives them. On Linux, asusctl does.

What it controls

Platform profiles, the same performance modes the vendor software exposes:

asusctl profile -l # list available
asusctl profile -P Quiet # set
asusctl profile -p # current

Fan curves per profile, which is the feature most people install it for:

asusctl fan-curve -m Performance -e true
asusctl fan-curve -m Quiet -f cpu -D 30c:20%,50c:35%,70c:60%,85c:100%

Battery charge limit, which meaningfully extends battery lifespan on a laptop that mostly sits on a desk:

asusctl -c 80

Keyboard backlighting, including per-key RGB on models that support it.

supergfxctl

The companion tool, for hybrid graphics switching between integrated, hybrid, and discrete modes:

supergfxctl -g # current mode
supergfxctl -m Integrated # switch, usually needs a logout

Running the desktop on integrated graphics with per-application offload is where most of the battery saving on these machines comes from. Our NVIDIA drivers guide covers the offload side and our power management guide covers the rest.

Installing

The project maintains repositories for several distributions, and it is packaged in the AUR and in Fedora COPR. Check asus-linux.org for the current instructions, which change as distributions pick it up.

sudo systemctl enable --now asusd

Hardware support varies

This is the honest caveat. ASUS ships many models with different firmware interfaces, and support for a specific machine ranges from complete to partial.

Check the supported hardware list before assuming a feature will work on your model, and note that a kernel new enough to include the relevant platform driver is usually a prerequisite.
