Archcraft 26.08 ships Linux kernel 7.1 on an Arch base, built around window managers rather than a full desktop environment.
The pitch
Archcraft is what a carefully themed window manager setup looks like when someone else does the theming. It ships Openbox alongside tiling options including bspwm, i3, and others, each with a coherent visual identity, configured status bars, application launchers, and keybindings.
If you have ever browsed a customization forum and wanted the result without spending a month getting there, this is that.
What you get
- Multiple window managers, each fully themed and configured
- Low memory footprint compared to a full desktop environment
- Consistent theming across GTK, Qt, terminal, and shell
- Preconfigured
rofimenus, polybaror equivalent bars, and compositor settings
The configurations are genuinely good, which is the thing that separates Archcraft from a themed wallpaper pack. The keybindings are sensible, the menus work, and the pieces fit together.
What you should understand first
Underneath the theming this is Arch, and Arch’s expectations apply. It is a rolling release, updates need attention, and when something breaks the answer is in the Arch wiki rather than Archcraft documentation.
A window manager is also not a desktop environment. There is no unified settings application, no session management in the GNOME or KDE sense, and no automatic handling of things like removable media or network configuration unless the distribution configured a tool for it. Archcraft configures most of them, but the model is different and worth understanding before committing.
Our Arch Linux explainer covers the base, and the desktop environments guide covers where window managers sit relative to full desktops.
Who it suits
People who want a minimal, fast, visually striking setup and are comfortable with Arch. It is a good way to try tiling window managers without configuring one from scratch, and a reasonable base to customize further.
