Most Radeon users on Linux never need this package: the open-source amdgpu kernel driver and Mesa’s RadeonSI/RADV userspace drivers, both included in the kernel and your distribution’s repositories, cover gaming and general desktop use well. AMDGPU-PRO exists for workloads that specifically need AMD’s proprietary stack: certain professional CAD/CAM applications certified against AMD’s official OpenGL implementation, and ROCm-based GPU compute workloads.
What This Installs
The amdgpu-install package is a meta-installer that pulls in AMD’s proprietary OpenGL and Vulkan components alongside the ROCm compute stack, layered on top of the same open-source amdgpu kernel module already in your kernel. It does not replace the kernel driver, it adds proprietary userspace components on top of it.
Installation
sudo dpkg -i amdgpu-install_7.2.4.70204-1_all.deb
sudo apt update
sudo amdgpu-install --usecase=graphics,rocm
Do You Actually Need This?
If you’re gaming or doing general desktop work, skip this and use your distribution’s default Mesa-based drivers, they’re actively developed, better integrated, and sufficient for the vast majority of Radeon hardware. Reach for AMDGPU-PRO specifically when a professional application’s certification matrix requires it, or when running ROCm compute workloads that need the proprietary stack.
