AlmaLinux emerged alongside Rocky Linux as a response to Red Hat’s CentOS Stream shift, but is governed and funded independently through the nonprofit AlmaLinux OS Foundation rather than a single company, with the explicit stated goal of remaining “forever free.”
What’s New in 10.2 “Lavender Lion”
This release added Python 3.14, PostgreSQL 18, MariaDB 11.8, Ruby 4.0, and PHP 8.4 as available packages, along with updated compiler toolsets. Notably, 10.2 also brought back i686 (32-bit) userspace packages for AlmaLinux 10, enabling legacy 32-bit software, CI pipelines, and certain containerized workloads that still depend on 32-bit libraries even on an otherwise 64-bit system. This release also marked the first time AlmaLinux shipped two version branches (9.8 and 10.2) on the same day.
Support Lifecycle
AlmaLinux 10 has active support through May 2030 and security support through May 2035, mirroring RHEL 10’s lifecycle.
