AerynOS is an independent distribution, successor to Serpent OS, built around its own moss package manager rather than a fork of anything existing. The 2026.08 release ships Linux 7.1 with GNOME 50 and COSMIC options.
The project ships regular update rollups; we covered the August updates, which brought GNOME 50.4, Plasma 6.7.4, and Linux 7.1.8 with an AMDGPU brightness fix.
Why an independent distribution matters
Most new distributions are reskins. They take Arch, Debian, or Fedora, apply configuration and theming, and ship it. That is a legitimate thing to do and it is not what AerynOS is.
AerynOS wrote its own package manager. moss uses atomic updates with full rollback, implemented through a content-addressable store rather than by layering images. The practical result is that an update either fully applies or does not, and reverting is a boot menu selection rather than a restore operation.
That puts it in the same conceptual family as Fedora Silverblue, openSUSE MicroOS, and NixOS, while taking a different implementation path from all three.
Desktop options
GNOME and COSMIC editions, with KDE Plasma also available. Shipping COSMIC as a first-class option is notable given how new that desktop is; most distributions still treat it as experimental.
The honest assessment
AerynOS is a young project doing genuinely interesting technical work, and it is not where you should put a machine you depend on.
Building a package manager from scratch means rebuilding decades of accumulated edge-case handling, and the package repository is necessarily smaller than any established distribution’s. Both improve with time and neither is fixed today.
It is worth installing if you are interested in where package management is going, and worth watching if you are not.
